Tickets in Ontario

Will tickets in Ontario impact my insurance rate?

Will tickets in Ontario impact your insurance? The answer to this question can vary, but the answer is most commonly YES, new convictions/tickets will have an impact on your car insurance rates in Ontario.  You will typically only see your rates increase on renewal, as the insurance company will then run new reports and update your driving record by deleting old convictions and adding anything new.  Convictions will remain on your driving record for 3 years from the date of conviction.

Does the ticket severity matter?

When it comes to auto insurance and tickets in Ontario, ticket severity will definitely play a significant factor in your insurance costs.  Insurance underwriting uses 3 different classifications for ticket severity which are as follows:

  • Minor – for example, this would be an unsafe move or speeding 10KM over.
  • Major – for example, Stunt driving, fail to obey police.
  • Serious/Criminal – for example, careless driving or impaired driving.

You will generally be considered high risk if you have 3 or more minor convictions or 1 major or serious conviction on your driver’s license report.  If you are unsure what is on your driver license you can request a 3-year conviction history report from Services Ontario https://www.ontario.ca/page/order-drivers-record.

I am fighting my tickets in Ontario court – will this show on my record?

If you have decided to fight a ticket in court rather than pay the fine, the ticket will typically not show on your record until a judgement has been reached your ticket is either reduced or removed entirely.  It is again important to understand the ticket will go on your record from the conviction date, not the offence date.

Do my demerit points have any impact on my car insurance?

Generally, the answer to this is no, as long as you are licensed, insurance underwriters will be more concerned with the severity & quantity of the tickets.  There is no question on the OAF1: Ontario Application for Automobile Insurance which asked you to disclose your demerit points.
